Cardiff Devils have signed defenseman Gleason Fournier from the East Coast Hockey League’s Alaska Aces.

The 24-year-old was a 3rd round NHL draft pick of the Detroit Red Wings in 2009 and a member of the Calder Cup winning Grand Rapid Griffins of the American Hockey League in 2013.

Last season he was selected to play in the ECHL all-star game after scored 5 goals and 19 assists in 57 games splitting his time with the Orlando Solar Bears and the Florida Everblades.

Fournier has been in excellent form with Alaska this season, notching 8 goals and 9 assists from 27 games.

He plays on the powerplay and penalty killing units for Alaska and is a big mobile defenseman who moves the puck well.

Cardiff Player/Coach Andrew Lord said: “He was playing 25+ minutes a game for his team in the ECHL and we believe he will be a top two-way defenceman in this league.

“Alaska is the only rink in the ECHL that is Olympic size, which half the rinks in this league are, including our new arena.”

Fournier is expected to make his Elite League debut at home to Nottingham Panthers on Saturday.
