Devils win 3-0 in Belfast over Giants

Cardiff Devils, British Ice Hockey

A 36 save effort from Ben Bowns saw the Devils hand the Belfast Giants their first home loss in Elite League play this season.

The Devils opened the scoring at 7:49, when Justin Faryna raced down the ice unopposed and lifted one over the shoulder of Belfast netminder Jackson Whistle, whose defence had left him stranded. The goal was assisted by Tyson Strachan and Bryce Reddick. The Devils dominated the play in the first period, outshooting the Giants 17-7, but Whistle kept his team in the game with a number of big saves to keep the score 1-0 after 20 minutes of play.

The second period saw the Giants get more opportunities to score, throwing 18 shots at Ben Bowns in goal, but they couldn’t find a way past the Devils’ netminder.

The Giants had their chances on the powerplay, but early in the third period, the Devils made it 2-0 when Gleason Fournier scored shorthanded at 45:46, with Matthew Myers getting the lone assist.  Belfast pulled their goalie with over 2 minutes to play, but the gamble didn’t work as Joey Martin quickly scored an empty net goal at 57:45 to round off the scoring at 3-0.

Ben Bowns picked up the man of the match for the Devils, collecting his third shutout of the season.
