Shannon Douglas scored an overtime winner as Great Britain Women U18 beat China 2-1 in the World Championship (Division 1B) tournament in Katowice.

China went ahead after seven minutes when Chunyang Fu netted from the slot, but GB quickly hit back through Casey Traill.

GB spurned a number of chances during the remainder of the first period, but couldn’t find a way past some dogged Chinese defensive work.

Neither side could find another goal in the second and third periods which sent the game to overtime.

Douglas tipped in a shot by Abbie Sylvester in the extra period as GB secured their first win of the tournament.

Head Coach Michelle Smith said: “The coaching staff are so proud of the girls – the way they bounced back from last night’s disappointment was amazing.

“They could’ve let their heads drop, but they didn’t and they showed strength in character.

“There were fantastic performances all over the ice and we need to take this into our final game.”

There are no games on Friday, with GB’s final fixture against Kazakhstan scheduled for Saturday (12.00 noon UK time).
