Great Britain Women will be involved in the second annual IIHF Global Girls’ Game on Saturday.

A record 38 countries will take part in this year’s event, with games will take place across the world this weekend.

Each country will play one-hour games with Team Blue taking on Team White – in the UK 44 players aged 11 and over will take part.

The IIHF organise the now-annual event to “send a strong message for girls’ hockey worldwide”.

Head Coach Cheryl Smith said: “This is something really good to be a part of.

“Not only is it special with all the games going on worldwide, but it helps us as coaching staff to assess the players.

“We have aimed this at young players who show real promise and incorporated them in with the GB U16 and experienced U18s to develop their game knowledge.

“We are running a few basic classes beforehand, so the youngsters start to experience what it takes to be an international player.

“These events allow them to get a feel of what it’s all about.”

The UK Global Girls’ Game takes place at iceSheffield on Saturday (face-off 9.00pm). Entry is free.
