Guildford Flames have signed Latvian forward Janis Ozolins from HK Mogo.

The 26-year-old has previous experience in Britain, having played in the EPL with Sheffield Steeldogs and the Elite League with Hull Stingrays and Dundee Stars.

In two separate spells with Sheffield, Ozolins notched 103 goals in 109 games. He was the league’s leading scorer in 2011/12 with 55 goals.

Player/Coach Paul Dixon said: “Janis is a very skilled player, and his rather successful track record in this league is a very good indication of that.

“He has excellent speed, and is a bona fide sniper when it comes to converting good opportunities into scoresheet entries.

“He has quite a varied experience in pro hockey near his homeland to go with stints here in the UK and selections for a national team that hovers around the top 10-12 in the world, competes in the top division of World Championship play and advanced to the quarter-finals in the Olympics as recently as 2014.”

“We always want to be a speedy, skilful side, and we have enhanced those qualities in our team with the addition of Janis.

“However, we have also been a little light on numbers recently and have played the last four games short-handed in terms of non-British trained players.

“We have not scored quite as much as we would have expected based on our roster potential, so this is a great opportunity to try and spark that a little bit with some new options, while also getting us closer to full strength in the immediate term.”
