Hull Pirates have confirmed the signing of forward Andrew Hirst from EPL rivals Sheffield Steeldogs.

The 24-year-old has spent the past five seasons icing for the Steeldogs, but also has Elite League experience with Hull Stingrays and Edinburgh Capitals.

Hirst said: “I’m excited – I want to come in and do a job here, work hard and see how I get on. I just want to come and contribute to the team.

“I felt like I needed a new opportunity and wanted to get back to enjoying my game. I want to get back to playing my game as I know I can as well as enjoying it.

Player/Coach Dominic Osman added: “He was another guy we were talking to over the summer. Andy brings a lot of energy and is in great shape.

“We know that he’ll play well defensively, but he’s also a guy who can also produce – he’s proved it in the past.

“When we heard that he was becoming available, it was something we needed to jump all over. We feel he’s going to be a great presence and fit in great on the ice as well as in the room.

“He brings a lot of character and he comes with a lot of experience – he’s hungry to win.

“We’re still pushing for the league, the cup and the play-off weekend, so to bring him in is a huge boost for us.”
