Kirk focussed on Petes and NHL dream

Liam Kirk says his decision to stay with Peterborough Petes instead of join up with Great Britain Under 20 squad next month is one that will benefit him.

Kirk’s Peterborough Petes side are top of the OHL and the youngster is enjoying a good campaign with 15 goals and 21 assists in his 28 appearances so far this season.

He’s focussed on going out to win a contract with Arizona Coyotes, with whom he was drafted to in 2018 after leaving Sheffield Steelers and it was a decision he informed Ice Hockey UK about in September.

“It’s a big year for me,” Kirk told The Peterborough Examiner. ”This is potentially my last year of junior and I want to showcase my skills and get a contract with Arizona. That’s my end goal.

“I love playing for my country and my national team and seeing the guys on these trips. But, I’m not trying to say I’m big-headed or anything, I know what I can do at that level.

“Obviously, I’d like to go back and win another medal. But I want to play hockey which is going to benefit me the most.”

“We’re going to have a championship season. That’s what we all believe in. We want to get as many wins as we can under our belt, and learn game-by-game, and develop as a team.

If everyone is together that will help and I think people back home will understand it’s my career.“
