The Manchester Storm have apologised following the abandonment of their Challenge Cup fixture versus the Sheffield Steelers on Sunday [26 October].
The Elite League awarded Sheffield a 2-1 win during the second intermission, with the ice surface at Planet Ice Altrincham deemed unplayable.
“We completely understand and share everyone’s frustration after last night’s game,” wrote Storm co-owners Ryan and Emma Finnerty.
“Nobody wanted that outcome – least of all our players, staff, and volunteers who work tirelessly to deliver the best possible game-night experience.”
The Steelers led 2-1 when the decision to abandon play was made, with Robert Dowd and Mitch Heard both striking for Sheffield in the 34th minute, before Kaleb Ergang brought the Storm back into contention three minutes later.

“The situation was unfortunately out of our control, but we recognise that you spend your hard-earned money to watch and enjoy the sport you love,” added Storm ownership.
“It’s incredibly frustrating when we can’t provide that, and we feel that disappointment just as much as you do.
“We’re working closely with Planet Ice to find a quick and fair solution to make sure we do right by everyone who came out to support – both our beloved Storm fans and those who travelled from Sheffield.
“We sincerely apologise for the cancellation and truly appreciate your patience, loyalty, and support. The Storm will continue doing everything possible to improve our game nights – that’s our focus moving forward.”
‘Rink staff informed the Elite League that it would not be possible to make the ice surface playable’
Added an Elite League spokesperson: “Game CC49 was abandoned after two periods due to issues with the ice at Planet Ice Altrincham.
“After an hour and 45 minutes of attempting to repair the ice, the rink staff informed the Elite League that it would not be possible to make the ice surface playable within a reasonable time frame in order to complete the game, and the game was therefore abandoned.
“As two full periods had been played, according to EIHL Rules the result stands at Manchester Storm 1-2 Sheffield Steelers.”
At the time of writing, representatives from Planet Ice are yet to comment on the abandonment.
