Great Britain Women started their World Championship (Division 2A) campaign in style with a 19-1 victory over Croatia in Slovenia, but came back down to earth after a 1-0 defeat against Korea in their second game.

Saffron Allen scored four times against Croatia, while there were hat-tricks for Sophie Herbert and Katie Henry.

Head Coach Cheryl Smith said: “That was a complete performance by the whole side.

“We did not want them to take anything for granted and they played hard all afternoon.

“There were outstanding performances over the ice and the coaching staff are very proud of them.”

GB hit penalty trouble at the start of the second period against Korea and Ko Hye In’s powerplay goal after 22 minutes was the difference between the two teams.

“We weren’t quite on it against Korea and lost some of the battles on the ice,” Smith added. “They were better than us and deserved their win – they were good all over the ice.

“It is a long tournament and there will be ups and downs. The important thing is we stay focused and put this result behind us quickly.”
