The future of the ice hockey on the Isle of Wight hangs in the balance, with both Wightlink Raiders and Wightlink Tigers cancelling their NIHL South games this weekend due to the closure of Ryde Arena.

The Isle of Wight Council’s health and safety inspector visited the Arena earlier this week following damage caused to the rink’s roof last Saturday.

Emergency services were called to Quay Road on Ryde Esplanade on Sunday morning when strong winds tore parts of the already-damaged roof off the Arena, endangering the public.

The rink initially remained open, but management have since decided to close the doors for the foreseeable future to allow repairs to be carried out.

Ryde Arena Trust has launched an appeal for donations to help them reopen England’s only community-run ice rink.
