Ross Venus says he’s determined to make a lasting impression on Great Britain Head Coach Pete Russell at the Olympic pre-qualifiers in Cortina.

The 21-year-old Coventry Blaze forward is already something of an Elite League veteran, with over 300 appearances and a game-winning goal in a play-off final under his belt.

“I’m young yes, but I have been around long enough now to make an impression,” he said.

“I’m confident in my ability, and I’m looking forward to having a good tournament and making a positive contribution.

“One of the things I’m particularly looking forward to is getting to know other players from around the league, especially some of the more experienced guys like Jonathan Phillips and David Clarke.

Joining Venus in the GB squad are Blaze duo Ashley Tait and Russ Cowley. He says he’s happy to be given the opportunity to play at international level with them and that he’s been lucky to work with some top coaches.

“It’s good to have these two guys with me. It’s nice to see familiar faces that I play every week with, but we’re all part of the same team for the next six days.

“I’ve had the likes of Paul Thompson and Chuck Weber coach me – I’ve learned so many good things and it’s given me the grounding to be able to be called up for GB.

“Even when I went to Telford a few years back and played a few games on loan there, I played for Tom Watkins, so I’ve learned from three great coaches already in my career. I’ve been fortunate in that respect.”
