The Coventry Blaze have completed the signing of veteran defenceman Colton Saucerman, following two seasons with the Sheffield Steelers.

The 33-year-old arrives at the Skydome Arena with a wealth of experience in North America and Europe, including 75 points (11 goals, 64 assists) in 128 Elite League appearances for Sheffield.

“Colton is one of the top powerplay defencemen in the league, and his ability to create offence from the blueline is going to be a huge asset for us,” said Blaze head coach Kevin Moore.

“He brings a gritty, hard-nosed style of defending that we know our fans will appreciate. Colton’s leadership and character will also be invaluable in our locker room.”

Saucerman came through the ranks at Northeastern University, where he recorded 64 points (20 goals, 44 assists) in 140 NCAA appearances.

The American’s collegiate resume saw him sign his first professional contract with the South Carolina Stingrays, kickstarting an ECHL career that saw him amass 148 points (26 goals, 122 assists) in 254 games played.

Saucerman’s two seasons on the continent also yielded positive results, potting 27 points (nine goals, 18 assists) in 63 Slovak Extraliga appearances for HC Kosice and 29 points (nine goals, 20 assists) in 29 ICE Hockey League games for HC Innsbruck.

A proven point-producer from the blueline, the USHL product adds immediate experience and leadership to Kevin Moore’s evolving defensive core.

Saucerman doesn’t just bring numbers (though his 75-point haul in Sheffield colours speaks volumes), he brings championship-winning pedigree, too.

At 5-foot-9 and 205 pounds, he plays with a creative spark, delivers clean exits under forechecking pressure, and thrives in high-leverage situations.

More importantly, Saucerman addresses Coventry’s desperate need for quarterback powerplay production.

The Blaze struggled to consistently generate offence from the point last season — a weakness exacerbated by Terrance Amorosa’s transfer to Herning Blue Fox.

With Saucerman in the quarterback role, Moore’s top unit should be far more dynamic and difficult to defend.

His ability to walk the line, disguise his intentions, and find seams through traffic makes him a natural fit to run Coventry’s top five-on-four unit.

However, Saucerman’s expansive style makes him more error prone than other high-usage Elite League defenders — a fact that will keep Moore on his toes this term.

At 33, the Colorado-native also isn’t as fleet-footed as he once was, but pairing him with a younger, more defensively-minded partner should overwrite any concerns about his veteran status.

The Blaze have added a battle-tested leader with a proven track record of winning and producing at both ends of the rink.

Saucerman is more than a big name — he’s a big piece of Coventry’s puzzle heading into 2025-26.
