The Manchester Storm have secured the services of a 25-year-old former Arizona Coyotes draft selection — and, no, their new signing isn’t Liam Kirk.

The Storm announced the arrival of netminder David Tendeck on Thursday [23 January], with the Canadian joining from the ECHL’s Florida Everblades ahead of this weekend’s Elite League action.

Who is Manchester Storm netminder David Tendeck?

Selected in the sixth round of the 2018 NHL Entry Draft by Arizona’s now-inactive franchise, Tendeck arrives in the Elite League with Western Hockey League, ECHL, and American Hockey League experience.

The Vancouver-born shot-stopper spent his major-junior career with his hometown Vancouver Giants, for whom he recorded a 2.96 goals-against average and .905 save percentage through 145 appearances.

Tendeck inked a three-year entry-level contract with the Coyotes in 2020, gaining professional experience with the Tucson Roadrunners (AHL), Rapid City Rush, Atlanta Gladiators, Wheeling Nailers, Idaho Steelheads, and Florida (ECHL).

The 6-foot-1 netminder exits North America’s third tier with a 35-44-6 record an .898 save percentage.

Analysis — why have the Manchester Storm signed David Tendeck?

The Storm are in a three-way fight with the Glasgow Clan and Dundee Stars for the final playoff qualification berth.

As it stands, Manchester are three points beneath the playoff line, albeit with three games in hand in their bid to overtake the Stars.

And they need saves. Badly.

Evan Wenninger’s recent performances have left plenty to be desired, benched 22 minutes into Manchester’s loss to the Belfast Giants, conceding three goals on twelve shots.

Versus the Fife Flyers a day earlier, he conceded five goals on 35 shots, helping the Scottish side snap their 13-game run of defeats.

Tendeck will battle Wenninger for starts, with homegrown shot-stopper Alex Odale providing backup from the bench.

“We are delighted to add David to further bolster the team as we continue to push forward for the remainder of the season,” said Storm head coach Mike Morin.

The Storm need a spark. They’re hoping Tendeck will provide it — an outcome far from guaranteed.
